Web design · Builders, contractors & trades

Contractor websites that show your work and bring in quote requests.

I build websites for home builders, general contractors, remodelers and trades, Makyson Building Company among them. Your project photos come up fast on a phone, and asking for a quote takes one tap. More than 60 of the sites I’ve built are still live.

What a contractor website has to do

Load your project photos fast on a phone

People pick a builder from pictures, usually on a phone and often with one bar of signal. I size each photo for the screen showing it and save it in a lighter format. The photos look the same. They just show up sooner.

Make asking for a quote easy

A call button and a quote button on every page, including the first screen on a phone. The form asks for the town, the kind of job and a rough timeline, so you know what you’re calling back about. I send a test through it before launch to make sure it reaches you.

Give the work you want its own page

If you want more additions and fewer small repairs, the site should say so. Each kind of work you want more of gets a page with photos from those jobs and the towns you cover. Google can only send people to a page that exists.

Keep your Google profile and reviews current

For a lot of local searches, Google shows a map and three businesses before any website. I set up or clean up your Google Business Profile, add your project photos and services, and give you a simple way to ask every customer for a review when the job wraps up.

Leave you owning everything

The domain, the Google profile, the analytics and the form inbox are in your name, with us added as a manager. If you ever leave, there’s nothing to hand over, because we’re not holding anything.

Cover the office IT too, if you want

Builders usually need their email, laptops and file sharing taken care of as well. We’ve supported a 35+ person construction firm’s IT for eight years.

Real work · Makyson Building Company

A custom home builder’s site, measured before and after

Makyson Building Company builds custom homes on the South Shore and Cape Cod. Their website is a portfolio: 135 photos across seven builds. On a phone, the main photo took 6.0 seconds to show up.

I measured before changing anything. Then I fixed three things. The photos are sized to the screen showing them, the fonts come from Makyson’s own site instead of Google’s servers, and every photo is in the lighter WebP format. Here’s the same test, before and after.

“I have worked with Greg at Knowledge Designs for almost 5 years, The services he offers and the process of setting everything up especially all done virtually is incredible, he is ahead of the curve when it comes to customer service and integrating my business with the latest technologies and following up periodically to make sure everything is running smooth and up to date. I highly recommend working with Knowledge Designs!”

Makyson buys its IT from us too, so a problem with the website and a problem with the office computers go to the same person.

Real work · SDC Container

A trade business that takes bookings online

SDC Container rents roll-off dumpsters across Metro West, Greater Boston and the North Shore. Their old WordPress site ran three booking plugins and still couldn’t take an order. Every job ended in a phone call to a man who spends his day driving a truck.

Now a customer picks a size, a rental term and a delivery day, pays by card, and the order lands on SDC’s dispatch board with the details already filled in. Orders settled about 58.7% above the pre-launch level and held there for more than two months, measured from SDC’s own Stripe data. In fairness, the booking page went live at the same time as a rebuilt site, local SEO and ongoing support, so part of that number belongs to the rest of the work.

What we run for SDC

  • The website and the online booking page, with card payments through Stripe
  • A dispatch app for the office, and a phone view for each driver
  • Town pages for the places SDC delivers
  • An email after every pickup that asks the customer for a Google review
  • Brochures and business cards with QR codes that open the booking page
  • Managed IT for the business

Most contractors won’t need a dispatch app. The part that carries over is simple: if a job starts with a phone call you can’t take because you’re up on a roof, the website should take the details for you.

How a build works

01

A call about the work

We talk about the jobs you want more of, the towns you want to work in, and who answers the phone. If you have a site now, I run Google’s speed test on it first and write the numbers down, so we both know where we started.

02

A fixed price

You get a written quote with a fixed price before any work starts. A focused site usually takes 3 to 4 weeks and a larger one 6 to 8, and I’ll tell you up front which one you’re looking at.

03

Photos, pages and design

We go through your project photos together and pick the best. I plan a page for each kind of work you want more of, and you see the design before it’s built. No stock photos of somebody else’s kitchen.

04

Launch, and after

Old page addresses get redirected so you keep anything that already ranks. The quote form gets a real test message. After launch we can host and update it. Send photos of a new job and we’ll add it.

Bigger builders, and anyone in a pinch

Larger companies often need more than a portfolio: a move off an old platform, online booking, a quote tool, or a site tied into the office systems. I’ll scope it with you and quote it as a fixed-price project.

If you’re in a pinch, call. Maybe the site got hacked, the domain is about to expire, or whoever built it moved on and nobody has the login. Chances are I’ve seen it before, and I’ll help even if you’ve never worked with us.

The website, the Google profile and the office IT can all sit with one team. That’s what All-in-One Management is for.

Not sure your current site is the problem?

Ask for a free website and Google audit. I’ll test the site’s speed on a phone, send a test message through your quote form, check who owns your domain, see how you show up in Google search and go through your Google profile. You get a short written list of what’s fine, what needs attention and what’s urgent. It’s free, same as our IT health check.

Contractor websites, answered

It depends on how many pages and projects you have, whether you want to edit it yourself, and whether it needs anything extra like online booking or a quote tool. So I quote after a short call instead of publishing a number that would be wrong for most people. The price is fixed and in writing. Our guide to what drives website pricing covers the big factors.

Not to start. Recent phone photos of finished work are fine if they’re sharp and well lit. I’ll help you pick the best ones, size them so they load fast, and tell you which jobs are worth a proper photo shoot later.

Yes, if you want to. We can build on WordPress or Webflow so you can post a job without breaking the design. If you’d rather not, send us the photos and a line about the job and we’ll put it up.

You do. The domain, your Google Business Profile and your analytics are in your name, with us added as a manager. Your quote form sends to an account in your name too. If you ever leave, there’s nothing to hand over.

I can’t promise that, and nobody else can either. Google says local results come down to relevance, distance and prominence, and that reviews can help. A good site gives Google a clear page for each kind of work you do and the towns you do it in, and it turns the visitors you already get into quote requests. Our local SEO guide covers the rest.

Often, yes. If the domain was registered to your business, the registrar can usually give you control back once you prove it’s yours. If the old vendor registered it in their own name, it takes their cooperation or a longer process. One look tells me which one you’re dealing with. After that, everything goes into your name so it can’t happen again.

Yes. We’ve supported a 35+ person construction firm’s IT for eight years, and Makyson buys IT from us as well as the website. See IT support for construction companies and IT for trades and contractors, or All-in-One Management if you want one team for all of it.
