“Where, exactly, is our data?”

For most businesses the honest answer is that they do not know, and it does not matter much. Public cloud is convenient, cheap at small scale, and well run. We put plenty of clients on Microsoft 365 and recommend it without hesitation.

But some organizations cannot answer that question with a shrug. A research group holding data under a use agreement. An engineering firm whose drawings are the entire value of the company. A laboratory with instrument output measured in terabytes and a grant budget that does not stretch to egress fees. A business that has read the terms of service closely enough to notice how often they change, and what they now permit.

For those organizations, private cloud storage on infrastructure you own is not paranoia — it is the correct architecture. We design, build, secure and support it.

Research & science organizations

Built for data that cannot go on the public cloud

Research data is large, is read constantly, and frequently arrives with strings attached — data use agreements, grant conditions, collaboration terms, institutional review requirements. Public cloud is a poor fit on all three counts: the storage bill scales with volume, the egress bill scales with how often you touch your own data, and the tenancy is shared by design. Private infrastructure inverts every one of those, and it is why laboratories, research groups and engineering organizations end up here.

Who this is actually for

Research groups and laboratories. Sequencing output, imaging, instrument logs and simulation results — datasets that are expensive to store, ruinous to move repeatedly, and often governed by an agreement specifying who may hold them and where.

Engineering and design firms. When the CAD library, the drawings and the design history are the company’s entire accumulated value, the case for holding them on hardware you own is not difficult to make.

Organizations with intellectual property worth stealing. Formulations, source code, prototypes, unpublished work. Control over tenancy, keys and access logs stops being an abstraction.

Businesses with contractual or regulatory constraints. Client agreements, sector rules or data protection obligations that specify jurisdiction, tenancy or auditability. We build to the constraint and document what was implemented.

Anyone tired of a storage bill that only ever goes up. Occasionally the reason is simply arithmetic. Past a certain volume, owning the disks is cheaper, and the cost stops being a function of how often you read your own files.

Where private cloud is the wrong answer

We would rather say this up front than sell you a server you do not need.

If you are a ten-person office whose data is documents, spreadsheets and email, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace is almost certainly the better choice. It is cheaper at your scale, someone else handles the redundancy, and the failure modes are well understood. Building private infrastructure for that workload adds cost and a maintenance responsibility for no meaningful gain.

Private cloud earns its keep when at least one of these is true: your data volumes are large enough that public storage and egress pricing hurts, your data carries contractual or regulatory constraints on where it lives, your intellectual property is the business, or you need performance a local link provides and an internet connection does not.

If none of those apply to you, we will tell you so. And if you are somewhere in between , which many organizations are, the usual answer is hybrid: everyday collaboration in the public cloud, the sensitive or heavy material on infrastructure you control.

How a build actually goes

1. What are we actually storing? Volume today, growth rate, how often it is read, who needs access, and any agreement or regulation governing it. This conversation determines everything downstream, and it is where we find out whether you need this at all.

2. Design. On-premise, offsite dedicated, or hybrid. Capacity and redundancy sized to what an outage would genuinely cost you. Encryption, authentication and access model agreed before anything is bought.

3. Build and migrate. Hardware provisioned, Proxmox and storage configured, Nextcloud or ownCloud deployed, and your existing data moved across in a controlled way — verified, not assumed.

4. Prove the backups. We restore from backup before we call the project finished. An untested restore is not a backup, and this is the step most providers quietly skip.

5. Support it. Monitoring, patching, capacity review and documentation, under the same managed agreement as the rest of your systems. Infrastructure nobody maintains becomes a liability within about eighteen months.

Common questions

The hyperscalers run more redundant infrastructure than any small deployment, and we will not pretend otherwise. What a well-built private setup gives you instead is control — over where data sits, who can reach it, what it costs as it grows, and what happens to it. For most organizations the honest answer is a hybrid: email and collaboration on Microsoft 365, sensitive or very large datasets on infrastructure you own.

It costs more up front and frequently less over time, and the crossover comes sooner the more data you hold. Public cloud storage is inexpensive per gigabyte until you have tens of terabytes, at which point the monthly bill and the egress charges for getting your own data back start to dominate. Private infrastructure has a capital cost and a predictable running cost that does not scale with how often you read your own files.

Not on infrastructure you own. That is a large part of why organizations come to us for this. Public providers publish terms describing what they do and do not do with customer content, and those terms change over time. Self-hosted storage removes the question rather than requiring you to keep monitoring the answer.

Yes, and it is a common reason for this kind of build. If an agreement, grant condition or contract specifies jurisdiction, tenancy or access constraints, we design to those constraints and document what was implemented so you can evidence compliance.

Closely enough that adoption is rarely the problem. There are desktop sync clients for Windows, Mac and Linux, mobile apps, browser access, shared links with expiry dates and passwords, and file versioning. The main difference your team notices is the address they log in at.

That is what the design is for. Depending on what you need, that means RAID and redundant power at the hardware level, snapshots and replication to a second location, and tested restores. We size the redundancy to what an outage would actually cost you rather than selling the largest configuration.

Yes, and it is one of the situations where private infrastructure makes the most sense. Instrument output, imaging and sequencing data are large, are read repeatedly, and are expensive to hold and move on public cloud. Local storage with offsite replication usually costs less and performs considerably better.

Yes, and most clients do. Email, calendars and everyday documents stay in Microsoft 365 where they work well. The sensitive or bulky material moves to storage you control. The two coexist without difficulty.
